The flannel flower is an iconic Sydney plant and has been used in imagery and art since colonial times. Grey and silver colouration is the result of a layer of white hairs on the leaf surface which reduces water loss by reflecting the sun's rays and which hold the moisture close to the leaf surface thus keeping the tissues cool.
Very delicate and quite elegant. I love it. If I lived in Australia, I'd have these wild plants instead, oh wait, maybe some orchids and the paper tree and eucalyptus tree...
Make those native orchids and you would have a native garden Ces. Best choice to have in Australia!
They're like sea anemonies or however they're spelt. Actually maybe just the close-up ones are.
Luckily they've got white petals to resist some of that Aussie sunshine!
Aha! This reminds me, these are still on the list for the new native garden...I wonder where that list has got to.....Thanks for the reminder Anon! They are charming plants and I must have them tehehhe
The Flannels are prolific right now Modroom! They look all hairy REALLY close-up and softer than a kitten :)
One thing I do know Lavender is they are VERY difficult to grow in a garden! Good luck with that, and let me know how they go :)
Love Aussie native flowers... When I don't feel like riding my Mtn bike like a loon, I take the camera and stop to take photos too..
these are great Anon!
Thanks Simon! These photos were taken within three hours, so a little embarrassing. It would be great to post the best from a long time period ... maybe the year after next :)
Love these shots...near my hometown there is a tiny village that is surrounded by flannel flowers at the moment...
Thanks Abbey! The Flannels do seem to be enjoying the current season!
