All very common in Australian backyards.
Everything seem to grow well in Australia!
Not everything Ces :) Remember, Australia was once attached to Africa!
But that was eons ago Anon. I suppose we can say that earth is verdant except in the desert but even the desert has its own flora. How big is the first flower and does it have any fragrance or does it stink?
The first flower is quite large, a couple of fist sizes. It has a fragrance but not one you would describe as 'sweet'. There's a whole tree of them over the back fence and the birds love them! Many types of Proteas are very popular here :)
WOW! Fantastic flowers! All amazing, I particularly LOVE that first one. Once again, I wish I could see them in real life.
Thanks Mary Stebbins Taitt :) Although originally from South Africa, a few species of the Protea are very popular in 'Native' Flower arrangements from florists here. Australian native plants like Waratahs, Banksias and Grevilleas are closely related ;)
Great blog~amazing images!! Congrat's on the blog award! Love those captures..I have always loved Protea..I'm not sure if I could grow it here in Va. but I would love to try..amazing plant!
Cat
Hello Catherine, thankyou! Proteas usually like full sun, always good air movement and drainage. They can also fairly tolerate frost. You should give them a go in your garden :) HERE is a great link to choose one for you!
yes- there are even nice protea displays at the Mt Tomah Botanical gardens!
It can get frosty there Simon! I visited one winter a long time ago. Once established the Proteas are also very drought resistant which makes them even more popular Australia wide :)
Very very beautiful! I like the colourful blossoms in this misty wet green background very much!
Thankyou Maria :) It's not usual for blossoms to be photographed in the mist and rain!
Well done!!!! Congratch for the brilliante award ....Keep it up
Hi Raj, thankyou :)
